HEARTBEAT TOPOGRAPHY
2023 Real-Time Audio-Reactive / Multisensory Project/ Digital Well-being
Both time and data tell a story, through our mindful intention.
Heartbeat Topography is a real-time audio visualization project that draws inspiration from Polyvagal Theory and aims to promote bodily and emotional security. It converts the detected heartbeat into visual topography to guide users in actively establishing a connection with their bodies. It could promote internal balance when users align their breath and heart rhythms with their perceived visual topography.
I hope for a soft and safe world.
Polyvagal theory, developed by Dr. Stephen Porges, explores the connection between the autonomic nervous system, social behavior, and emotional regulation. It suggests that our physiological responses, including heart rate and breathing, are crucial to our overall well-being and sense of safety. The theory emphasizes the importance of establishing a state of calm and connection to promote optimal physiological and emotional functioning.
Entrainment , is where external stimulation, such as visual cues or rhythmic patterns, influences and aligns with internal physiological processes. It serves as a guide, allowing people to observe and adjust their breath and heart rhythms to achieve a state of balance and relaxation.
Heartbeat Topography uses changing colors inspired by the natural world, incorporating principles from color therapy.
The dynamic interplay of hues adds an additional layer of sensory stimulation and emotional resonance to the visual experience.

These visual landscapes vary based on the intensity and frequency of the sound,
each individual's unique data gives rise to a distinctive and personalized terrain.
Breathing, thinking, and feeling are tied together through the autonomic nervous system (Ma et al., 2017).
Autonomic regulation and a story of safety happen when the heart and the breath are in harmony.

Heartbeat Topography Exhibition Documentary
2023.5/2023.7
Metre Squared Arts Centre, London
During this experience,
Participants will position a stethoscope on their hearts, with a mini microphone embedded in the tube to detect internal body sounds.
The sound signals will be adjusted for quality and adaptability through an Audio Interface and delivered to the participants by headphones.
At the same time, these signals will be linked to real-time interactive software to convert the sound into visual effects.
Heartbeat Topography Projection Art
Fashion is a way of exploring the concept of holistic well-being and incorporating technologies that enhance personal experiences and self-expression. Heartbeat Topography through projection transforms bodies into interactive canvases that respond to the wearer's internal rhythms. It could potentially be integrated into wearable technology or smart textiles to enhance the user's experience and promote well-being through greater awareness of body connection and engagement.
The more we become familiar with the breath, the more it becomes a heaven for our awareness- something we could trust.
